Who Is ButcherCrowd?

Australian family owned and operated company ButcherCrowd was founded by brothers Damien and Rob Moffatt in response to their growing concerns about how we source our meat and seafood, the welfare of farmed animals, and the deteriorating taste and quality of our meat and seafood products.

Australia’s first and largest free home delivery service for certified humanely raised and sustainably sourced, premium meat and wild-caught seafood products, ButcherCrowd partners with trusted farming and fishing families from the tropical blue waters of Far North Queensland to the lush green pastures of Tasmania.

Our mission is to grow a community that connects people to their food – Food as Nature Intended - so we can all share better meals together.

The Story Behind an Australian Family Venture

ButcherCrowd launched in 2020. A time of extreme challenge for many, but also arguably a time of incredible opportunity as well. We were all forced to stop, take time to reassess our lives and contemplate some of life’s deeper questions.

Seated around the family dinner table, brothers Rob and Damien Moffatt reflected on the poor quality and lacklustre taste of the roast chicken meal they were all sharing. Reminiscing about their childhood days on the farm when chickens, raised naturally in the outdoors and free to roam and behave as nature intended, simply tasted better. The idea was sparked, and this Australian small family business was born.

What drives us? Sourcing food with integrity

Many people believe in the transformative power of love, but not everyone acts to create a more loving and compassionate world. While approximately two-thirds of Australians identify as meat eaters (Statista, 2024), enjoying meat doesn't have to mean forgoing animal welfare, which is a core principle driving ButcherCrowd.

We carefully select our products from Australian farming and fishing families, along with producers, who align with our values. Thereby offering a range that includes 100% wild-caught seafood, grass-fed and finished beef and lamb, and free-range and pasture-raised chicken and pork. We are committed to providing products free from antibiotics and hormones used for growth promotion, as well as being non-GMO, to customers seeking alternatives to factory-farmed animals. We take pride in ensuring that our animals are ethically raised in stress-free environments, enjoying a natural diet and are free to roam pastures as nature intended.

Our commitment extends to sourcing wild-caught fish and seafood from sustainable fisheries that prioritise the health of marine ecosystems. While most of our seafood comes from Australian fishing families dedicated to responsible and sustainable harvesting practices, our wild-caught Sockeye salmon is sourced from the pristine waters of Canada and Alaska because only farmed salmon is available in Australia.

A large majority, around eighty to eighty-five percent of Australians, typically purchase their meat and seafood from supermarkets (Tan, 2023). In early 2024, Australia’s supermarket duopoly faced scrutiny from the government and the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) for practices such as price gouging, profiteering, and undercutting their producers and suppliers (Bathgate, 2024). Most Australians don’t support this behaviour; at ButcherCrowd we certainly do not.
