The Future of Our Food: Why ButcherCrowd Is Rewriting the System

News
future-of-food

Our food system is broken. Supermarket shelves are stocked, but the farmers behind them are struggling. Consumers pay more than ever, yet producers earn far less than ever. Filled with middlemen, markups, and questionable sourcing, industrial supply chains are failing the people, animals, and planet they’re meant to serve.

At ButcherCrowd, we believe in a better way — a more fair, transparent, and sustainable way. One that reconnects people to where their food comes from and the farmers who produce it.

But first, let’s unpack what’s gone wrong.

Supermarkets: Built for Convenience, Not Sustainability

On the surface, supermarkets offer convenience. But behind the scenes, they rely on:

  • Centralised buying power that drives wages down for producers (1)

  • Mass production and factory farming to ensure "consistency" (2)

  • Long, ambiguous supply chains that prioritise volume over value (3)

This system leaves farmers with shrinking margins, inflexible contracts, and little control. Despite rising shelf prices, according to the ACCC, most of the profit is absorbed before it ever reaches the farm (3).

Supermarket meat is often stripped of context and traceability. Labels like “Australian Made” reveal very little, and the meat itself may be intensively farmed, processed offshore, and shipped vast distances before it hits the shelf.

When food becomes anonymous, we lose sight of the values that matter most.

Farmers Deserve Better

Supermarkets now dominate how food is sourced and priced, leaving farmers to produce in bulk at the lowest possible cost, absorb the financial pressure of supply chain inefficiencies and sacrifice meat quality.

This isn’t just an economic issue, it’s about ethics, sustainability, and the future of food in Australia. If we want quality, nutrient-rich food from trusted producers, we have to pay them fairly. According to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), average cash incomes for beef farms dropped by 66% in 2023–24 (4). This reflects a continued trend of higher output demands, which doesn’t guarantee higher returns for farmers. As we see an increased supply enter the market, driven by bulk production needs, this unfortunately has pushed wages downward. Despite record or near-record production in sectors like beef, sheep, and pork, the farm-gate prices have generally not kept pace, resulting in a decline in overall value for many producers (5).

Our Model: Ethical, Direct, and Transparent

ButcherCrowd exists to flip the system.

We work with Australian farmers and fishers who raise and harvest food ethically and sustainably:

  • Grass-fed and finished beef and lamb

  • Free-range, pasture-raised chicken and pork, free from antibiotics and hormones used for growth promotion

  • Wild-caught seafood from Australian and Canadian/Alaskan (wild salmon only) waters

By cutting out the middlemen, we give producers fairer margins — and we give you better quality meat.

No feedlots. No hidden markups. Just consciously sourced protein delivered straight to your door.

Less Waste, More Value

A typical supermarket supply chain can involve five or more steps, each one adding a cost and removing transparency. These handling, transportation, and processing costs, can contribute to as much as a 43-59% increase to the product cost, showing just how much these cumulative costs can impact consumers at the checkout (6).

Our direct-to-consumer model is simpler and smarter:

  • Meat is flash-frozen at peak freshness

  • There's less waste and fewer overheads

  • More of your dollar goes back to the source, not distributors or retailers

It’s a cleaner, leaner supply chain — and one that puts people and ethics first.

Respecting the Animals That Feed Us

Animal welfare is central to how we source. Our producers raise animals naturally, on pasture, with room to roam, and without artificial growth-enhancing hormones or stress-inducing conditions.

This means:

  • Free-range poultry and pork with lower disease risk and no overcrowding

  • Wild fish that swim freely and develop leaner, cleaner meat

  • Pasture-raised livestock that improve soil health and produce more nutrient-dense meat

Better conditions lead to better outcomes — for the animals, the land, and the final product on your plate (7).

Eating Meat Responsibly

Meat itself isn’t the problem. It’s how we produce and consume it that matters.

At ButcherCrowd, we promote conscious meat eating. Sourcing ethically, using the whole cut, and planning meals to avoid waste.

When you subscribe to a ButcherCrowd box, you’re choosing to be more intentional about what you eat — and where it comes from.

Why This Matters

We’re at a crossroads. Climate change, supply disruptions, and rising demand for transparency are forcing the industry to change.

Real progress starts with everyday decisions. When you choose ButcherCrowd, you’re:

  • Supporting Aussie farming and fishing families

  • Upholding animal welfare and regenerative practices

  • Rejecting anonymous, factory-farmed supermarket meat

  • Helping reshape the food system from the ground up

Final Thoughts

A better food future isn’t just possible — it’s already in motion.

By supporting producers who care for animals, land, and quality, and cutting out the wasteful systems that distort value, we can build a food supply chain that truly works.

At ButcherCrowd, we’re proud to be part of that movement — and we’d love for you to be part of it too.

Together, we can create a food system that’s fair, ethical, and sustainable — for the land, the farmer, the animal, and you.
